10/1/2011 1:13pm - Another page, this project is stretching a bit further than I'd originally thought it would. I keep thinking that things will slowly drop below my new threshold of vigilance but something always seems to catch my eye. Take for example the graphic below. I found it on a site reporting the information but on the governmental agency's site from which it comes I can't find it at all. Additionally do you notice anything odd? Perhaps you've noticed the dearth of information for Tokyo and Kanagawa (where Yokohama and Kawasaki are). It strikes me more than a bit odd that 6 months into this they have no information for the areas where roughly 34 million people live. One of the reasons that I am more than a little skeptical of the government's efforts to inform us of what is, and has been, going on. (Seriously, "areas without data"?)

cesium_map

Cesium fallout map illustrates Kanto levels - The article states that the ministry plans to release data about Tokyo and Kanagawa by the end of October but you would have thought it would have been a bit more of a priority.

Japan 'scared' of telling truth to Fukushima evacuees

Fukushima desolation worst since Nagasaki

Japan lifts some nuclear evacuation advisories

Radioactive hotspots found in prefectures neighboring Tokyo

Plutonium traces found in Iitate soil

Chiba teen in trouble for selling radioactive key holder - On the other side of radiation worries, a bit of silliness. A law concerning radiation hazards that goes after tritium in a keychain fob even though they know they're not dangerous. (tritium markers are in many watches, exit signs, keychain fobs, and even gun sights) I find this a strange juxtaposition with the lack of radiation concerns and reporting by the government on other isotopes that are in fact dangerous.

Small Japanese factory has answer to next quake and tsunami: Noah's Ark shaped like a ball - Serious business it may be but it makes me smile nonetheless.

11/5/2011 1:06pm - Well the expected update for the radiation levels in Tokyo and Kanagawa (from above article) is proving difficult to find. The MEXT site (government ministry site where it should be) is not the easiest to navigate and I've not seen anything in the news. Maybe the government is thinking if they ignore it or hide their heads long enough it will all 'blow away' as it were. It's not really a surprise, actually none of the following articles are all that surprising, disappointing, frustrating, pick your favorite adjective, but not surprising.

8/5/2013 9:41am - I never did find those radiation reports promised by the government shown like the map above. What was released is sufficiently convoluted that we still know hardly anything. I'm posting this only because of a number of reminders lately. Last night there was a magnitude 6 quake not too far from the original site and there have been a fair number of "bad news" articles being released about the Dai Ichi nuclear plant, steam leaks, ground radiation, leaks into the ocean, etc. I'm just going to put a few links below. This is old news for the rest of the world so many of my previous links have vanished. For those of you still following, one of the easier sources to check is http://www.newsonjapan.com/.

Graphing Earthquake, Radiation and Water Data in Japan - "The Radiation Graphs are made from data from monitoring posts setup by the Prefectural Offices, TEPCO and NISA. I am focusing on these as they are only in Japanese and provide a different view on the MEXT Radiation Data that everyone else is graphing. Please note that the graphs do have different scales depending on the data. All Radiation readings are converted to μSv/h for consistency."
